Powerflushing Milton Keynes
Powerflushing Milton Keynes
Heating Matters Ltd provides professional powerflushing and central heating system flushing across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas. We use the ADEY MagnaCleanse system — an advanced magnetic flushing solution that removes sludge, magnetite and debris from your central heating more effectively and gently than traditional powerflushing machines. If your radiators have cold spots, your boiler is making strange noises, or your heating bills have crept up, a system flush could be exactly what you need.

What Is Powerflushing?
Powerflushing is a deep cleaning process for your central heating system. Over time, the water inside your radiators and pipework reacts with the metal components, creating a black sludge called magnetite. This sludge builds up inside radiators, settles in pipework and clogs up your boiler's heat exchanger. The result is cold spots on radiators, uneven heating, noisy boilers, and higher gas bills because your system has to work harder to heat your home.
A powerflush pushes cleaning chemicals and fresh water through the entire system at high flow rates, dislodging the sludge and flushing it out. Once the system is clean, we add a corrosion inhibitor to protect your heating system going forward.
Why We Use ADEY MagnaCleanse
We don't use a standard powerflushing machine. We use the ADEY MagnaCleanse system, which is a more advanced approach to system flushing. The key difference is magnetic filtration — as dirty water circulates through the MagnaCleanse unit, powerful magnets capture the magnetite and iron oxide particles that are the main cause of heating system problems. Traditional powerflushing relies purely on water velocity to push debris out, but the MagnaCleanse actually traps and removes the particles as they pass through.
We use ADEY MagnaCleanse because it offers several advantages over traditional powerflushing. It's gentler on your system — the MagnaCleanse works using your boiler's own circulating pump rather than forcing water through at high pressure, which makes it safe for all system types, including older and more delicate heating systems. It keeps the water hot throughout the process, which means the cleaning chemicals stay concentrated and work more effectively. The transparent hoses let us see exactly when the water is running clean, so we know the job is done properly rather than guessing. And it's quicker too — a typical three-bedroom house can be completed in around two hours.
We combine the MagnaCleanse with ADEY's MC5 RapidFlush Cleaner, which starts breaking down magnetite, scale and debris within an hour, and the VibraClean agitator, which shakes loose even hardened deposits from inside your radiators — removing more sludge in 20 seconds than you'd get in 30 minutes without it. The combination of magnetic filtration, professional-grade chemicals and mechanical agitation gives a far more thorough clean than a standard powerflush.
Powerflushing Microbore and 10mm Pipe Systems
A lot of homes in Milton Keynes — particularly those built in the 1970s, 80s and 90s — have microbore heating systems. These use narrow 8mm or 10mm copper pipes running from a manifold to each radiator, rather than the standard 15mm or 22mm pipework you find in newer installations. Microbore systems are more prone to sludge blockages because the smaller pipe diameter means there's less room for water to flow past any build-up. A small amount of sludge that wouldn't cause any issues in 22mm pipe can completely block a 10mm pipe, especially at bends.
This is where the ADEY MagnaCleanse really comes into its own. Traditional powerflushing machines push water through at high velocity, which can struggle to clear compacted sludge from narrow microbore pipes — and in some cases, the force can actually compact the blockage further or stress older pipework. The MagnaCleanse takes a different approach. Because it works at lower pressure using your existing pump and relies on magnetic capture rather than brute force, it's far better suited to microbore systems.
We also pre-treat microbore systems with cleaning chemicals before the flush. This gives the chemicals time to break down the deposits inside the narrow pipes, loosening the sludge so it can be flushed out more easily. For badly sludged 10mm systems, we may need to allow more time than a standard flush, and we'll always be upfront about that when we quote.
If you've been told your microbore system can't be flushed, or that you need to rip out all the pipework, give us a call first. In many cases, a MagnaCleanse flush with the right pre-treatment can restore a microbore system that other methods have failed to clear.
Signs Your Heating System Needs a Powerflush
Cold spots on radiators — If your radiators are hot at the top but cold at the bottom, that's sludge sitting in the bottom of the radiator blocking the water flow. This is the most common sign.
Some radiators not heating up at all — If one or more radiators won't get warm even when the rest of the system is running, the pipework feeding them could be partially blocked.
Noisy boiler — Banging, kettling or gurgling noises from your boiler often mean sludge has built up in the heat exchanger, causing localised hot spots.
Slow to heat up — If your heating takes much longer to warm the house than it used to, the system is probably working against sludge buildup.
Discoloured water when you bleed radiators — If the water coming out of your radiator bleed valve is black or brown instead of clear, there's magnetite in your system.
Boiler keeps cutting out — Sludge in the heat exchanger can cause your boiler to overheat and lock out. If your boiler keeps shutting itself down, a system flush may fix the problem without needing an expensive boiler repair.
You're getting a new boiler fitted — We strongly recommend a system flush before any new boiler installation. Fitting a brand new boiler onto a dirty system is one of the most common reasons for premature boiler failure. Sludge from the old system will get into your new boiler's heat exchanger and can void your manufacturer's warranty. Every boiler installation we carry out includes a full system flush as standard.
What's Included in Our Powerflushing Service
Every powerflush from Heating Matters includes an initial assessment of your system to check the condition of radiators and pipework, pre-treatment with cleaning chemicals where needed (especially for microbore systems), a full MagnaCleanse flush of the entire system including each radiator individually, treatment with ADEY MC5 RapidFlush Cleaner and VibraClean agitation, a fresh fill with clean water, dosing with corrosion inhibitor to protect your system going forward, and a check that all radiators are heating evenly once the flush is complete.
We also recommend fitting an ADEY MagnaClean magnetic filter to your system after the flush. This sits on your pipework and continuously captures magnetite as it forms, keeping your system clean between services. If you don't already have one, we can fit one during the same visit.
Areas We Cover
We provide powerflushing services across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas including Newport Pagnell, Bletchley, Wolverton, Woburn Sands, Stony Stratford, Deanshanger, and all Milton Keynes estates and districts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a powerflush cost?
It depends on the size of your system — mainly how many radiators you have and the type of pipework. Call us on 07460 126654 for a quote. We'll ask a few questions about your system and give you a price upfront.
How long does a powerflush take?
A typical system with standard pipework takes around 2-3 hours with the MagnaCleanse. Microbore systems or heavily sludged systems may take longer. We'll let you know what to expect when we quote.
Will it make a mess?
No. The MagnaCleanse is a clean, self-contained process. All the dirty water is captured within the unit and drained away in a controlled manner. We always put down dust sheets and leave your home as we found it.
Can you powerflush my microbore/10mm pipe system?
Yes. The ADEY MagnaCleanse is particularly well suited to microbore systems because it works at lower pressure and uses magnetic capture rather than relying on brute force. We pre-treat microbore systems with cleaning chemicals to break down deposits before flushing.
How often should I get a powerflush?
A well-maintained system with a magnetic filter and correct inhibitor levels shouldn't need flushing more than once every 5-10 years. We check your system water quality during annual boiler services, so we'll let you know if a flush is needed.
Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler?
Yes — we recommend it for every boiler installation. Most boiler manufacturers require a clean system for the warranty to be valid. We include a system flush as standard with all our boiler installations.
